In 2015, Saba traveled over seven thousand miles to the United States from her home country of Iran. Her goal was to find a better lifestyle in a culture that allowed women to prosper and flourish. After years of hard work and determination, Saba is the Lab Manager and Head of the Local Quality Control Unit at our MATHESON location in Houston, Texas.
However, the road to her current role was not an easy journey. Saba’s career began in 2011 after she graduated with a Master’s Degree in Chemistry. Her first position was as a Lab Chemist for a pharmaceutical company in Iran, where she worked until she decided to move to the United States. Once she arrived in the US, she worked as a cashier to help improve her English. A year later, she was hired by an oil company as a Lab Technician and worked there until she had her first child. After taking a break from her career to focus on her family, Saba was hired by MATHESON. Though, it was not without some initial challenges.
“When I started working at MATHESON, I had limited experience as a Lab Technician and knew one piece of equipment in the warehouse. However, I began studying by reading the FDA regulations, asking my fellow team members questions about the new devices, and doing all I could to learn more about the industry to help me succeed in my new position at MATHESON.”
Also, there was the apprehension of being one of few women in her field, but she has this advice to give to women interested in working in the gas industry.
“I was anxious and a little intimidated seeing that not only was the office male-dominated, but the equipment seemed designed for men using it. However, as I continued to work and learn at MATHESON, I began to see how much potential I had and what I was capable of. My coworkers supported and encouraged me and helped me see that inner strength. This role and industry have given me confidence in myself which has helped me not only succeed professionally but has allowed me to grow personally.”
Saba’s love for learning still plays a significant role in her life. In her downtime, she enjoys reading psychology books to educate herself and utilize what she learned from those books to be better at her job and how to interact better with coworkers. Saba is also passionate about exercising. She enjoys salsa dancing and biking. She rides with about two hundred people weekly and bikes for two to three hours.
Congratulations Saba on being January’s employee spotlight. You truly are an inspiration to everyone you touch.
