More Efficient Cell Therapy Cryo-Storage Solution

MATHESON’s biotechnology team recently collaborated with a leading research hospital to develop an efficient system for handling and storing cell samples. The FDA requires that cell samples be maintained at a temperature below -150⁰ C while in storage and requires that the hospital track and maintain accurate records of all freezers in the cryobank.

MATHESON’s team installed a universal tank switcher with a fully automated manifold connected to the Dewars of liquid nitrogen supplying the cell storage freezers.  The universal tank switcher allows liquid nitrogen to be pulled from one Dewar, and then switched to a new Dewar once the original Dewar is emptied, thus ensuring a continuous supply of liquid nitrogen. The system also provides remote access to a cloud-based system for better monitoring and oversight and features an alert mechanism at the first indication of an issue.

The efficiency of the new system has reduced the amount of liquid nitrogen consumption by 30% thus decreasing the number of needed deliveries which equates to a decrease in CO2 emissions and an increase in fuel economy for the delivery vehicles…

As we start the new year at MATHESON, we begin this year’s Employee Spotlight by highlighting Hub Plant Manager Samantha in Tualatin, Oregon. She started with MATHESON twelve years ago in Newark, California as a lab technician after obtaining a Chemistry and Biology degree.

Ultimately being promoted to the Production Manager in Newark, she continued to utilize her knowledge and skill before being promoted to Hub Plant Manager in Tualatin in 2021. She continues to fill a vital role for the MATHESON team by managing and supporting her plant, overseeing canister transfers and gas fillings for stores throughout the State, along with product shipments to MATHESON stores within Oregon, Alaska, and Washington State.

To women looking to join our field: Go for it. Continue pushing forward, and you can make it happen. We need more women in the industry, which our current generation is working to achieve.

Samantha

“My job includes ensuring that our employees are safe, products are shipped, and everything runs smoothly. It can be challenging, but I like problem-solving and the satisfaction that follows efficiently completing a task,” Samantha said.

She says she is glad to have such a willingly supportive team, “What I like most about my job is the people. Having supportive and hardworking team members to depend upon is something for which I am grateful.”

Samantha encourages men and women to explore the many opportunities for advancement MATHESON has to offer while exuding positivity for women looking to join our industry.

“To women looking to join our field: Go for it. Continue pushing forward, and you can make it happen. We need more women in the industry, which our current generation is working to achieve.”

When Samantha is not working, she loves being outdoors, kayaking, camping, and hiking with her husband and pets. Besides exploring the local nature of Oregon, she and her husband are also avid travelers. She noted that she and her husband like to “Visit one new place each year.” She has been all over the World, from Iceland to Bali, noting that the latter is one of her favorite places.

If you ever find yourself camping in the Oregon wilderness, then be on the lookout for Samantha.   If you are interested in learning more about MATHESON’s career opportunities, click below:

Tech Bulletin – Weld Cost Analysis

 Weld Cost Analysis

At MATHESON, we are committed to partnering with our customers to help them be the most competitive in their respective industries. As part of that commitment, we work with customers on welding cost reduction. Every day we see opportunities to help our customers save money in their welding operations.

In this bulletin, we’ll discuss MIG welding, but many of the principles can be applied to any process and technology.

Managers working at fabricators and manufacturers must make decisions about welding-related costs all the time. These decisions might be about comparing outsourcing versus in house fabrication – or perhaps considering the payback on a capital expense such as a robot. At the core of it all is the complicated question of how to accurately calculate Cost Per Piece in the first place. We will open the discussion on that question here. You be the judge on what works for your shop.

One misconception is that the cost of materials – gas, filler, flux, consumable parts – is the path to savings. Many fabricators find it easier to add up the costs of consumables for the shop versus quantifying other weld-related costs. However, it has been shown that cost reductions derived from labor savings and quality improvements are typically more impactful, more controllable, and more sustainable. MATHESON can help you examine these factors.

Meet Saba, Our January Employee Spotlight

In 2015, Saba traveled over seven thousand miles to the United States from her home country of Iran.  Her goal was to find a better lifestyle in a culture that allowed women to prosper and flourish.  After years of hard work and determination, Saba is the Lab Manager and Head of the Local Quality Control Unit at our MATHESON location in Houston, Texas.

However, the road to her current role was not an easy journey.  Saba’s career began in 2011 after she graduated with a Master’s Degree in Chemistry.  Her first position was as a Lab Chemist for a pharmaceutical company in Iran, where she worked until she decided to move to the United States.  Once she arrived in the US, she worked as a cashier to help improve her English.   A year later, she was hired by an oil company as a Lab Technician and worked there until she had her first child.  After taking a break from her career to focus on her family, Saba was hired by MATHESON. Though, it was not without some initial challenges.

…as I continued to work and learn at MATHESON, I began to see how much potential I had and what I was capable of. My coworkers supported and encouraged me and helped me see that inner strength.

Saba

“When I started working at MATHESON, I had limited experience as a Lab Technician and knew one piece of equipment in the warehouse. However, I began studying by reading the FDA regulations, asking my fellow team members questions about the new devices, and doing all I could to learn more about the industry to help me succeed in my new position at MATHESON.”

Also, there was the apprehension of being one of few women in her field, but she has this advice to give to women interested in working in the gas industry.

“I was anxious and a little intimidated seeing that not only was the office male-dominated, but the equipment seemed designed for men using it. However, as I continued to work and learn at MATHESON, I began to see how much potential I had and what I was capable of. My coworkers supported and encouraged me and helped me see that inner strength.  This role and industry have given me confidence in myself which has helped me not only succeed professionally but has allowed me to grow personally.”

Saba’s love for learning still plays a significant role in her life.   In her downtime, she enjoys reading psychology books to educate herself and utilize what she learned from those books to be better at her job and how to interact better with coworkers.  Saba is also passionate about exercising.  She enjoys salsa dancing and biking.  She rides with about two hundred people weekly and bikes for two to three hours.

Congratulations Saba on being January’s employee spotlight.  You truly are an inspiration to everyone you touch.
